  Incredibly beautiful pieces, John. Each is indeed a work of art. 

  I always wonder if they were actually used or mainly served as status symbols on festive occasions.

  Betty generally in almost all daggers where made or rehilted from fathers or grandfathers dagger or sword for battle. There have been thank god so many given as gifts that survived unscathed.
  Some of the dagger or shashka restoration project I take on is because of either the piece had historical significance or the quality was excellent but had been used so hard it fell into disrepair.
  Very similar to Cretan, ottoman weapons with solid silver scabbards and silver chains. Etc. I also collect these.

  Thank you for those pictures and if you can see that the waist belt also has the shashka Hangers attached. Normally the shashka had it's own separate shoulder belt.
