Bridal necklace. Beadwork. Çölovası (Afyon) / Turkey.

Bridal necklace from Türkmen villages in the Dinar district (Afyon province), e.g. in the valley of Çölovası. Beadwork of small glass pearls, first quarter of 20th century. With an Ottoman inscription in Arabic script, and edged with a row of ‘karanfil’ (clove). The clove is used because of its pleasant smell, which is symbolically transferred to the bride. Purchased in Afyon, in 1996. (Inv.nr. bon019 - Kavak Costume Collection-Antwerpen/Belgium).
