Belt - Macedonia

It is very interesting to see that some of the filigree was kept intentionally in silver while most of the belt is gold plated. This gives the piece a voluminous design.

  • This is a museum piece.  You are really on a roll, Peter.  Congratulations!!

    The alternating silver and gold was common in 18th-19th century Ottoman jewelry, from what I have seen.  I think it gives a powerful impression of opulence. At the time it also probably demonstrated that the plated metal is itself high value (silver or silver alloy) instead of copper, brass or bronze.
