This is a very old buckle - the date of 1889 is engraved on the buckle, together with a fish and a cross.

Wonderful buckle, have not seen this type before. Is that niello? The signature is fantastic!

Dear Lynn; Yes, it is niello. However, I could imagine that it was redone at some stage without taking good care of the original decoration. I have two more of these buckles (previously posted on EJ). While they are originating from Bulgaria, my smart books is telling me that it does not know the exact origin... However, it is high silver (it was a delight to clean it!), featuring beautifully executed appliques.
