Late-Ottoman belt buckle, from the Balkans (probably Albania or Epirus). Circa end of 19th century. When Albania became independent (1912), many inhabitants who were connected to the former Ottoman occupant, became refugees and settled in Turkish Thrace. On exhibit in the Edirne Museum. Dear Jean-Marie; This is a gorgeous belt! I have a similar piece in my collection but with a different, very large buckle. At the beginning, I was not sure whether the buckle on my belt was a later replacement but then I have seen almost an identical piece. The shape of your buckle can, however, be seen on a majority of these belts. I believe that I have posted a photo of my belt on EJ. Otherwise let me know and I will post it. Dear Peter,

Just to avoid misunderstandings: this buckle (and all the objects of this album that I made to-day) are not/were never mine (alas...). They belong to the collections of the museum(s) mentioned.

I opened this album because a EJ-member stated/'complained' that Anatolian jewelry was so poorly documented (which is absolutely so). Since I have pictures from Turkish museums (taken myself, or from a Dutch friend to whose pbase-site I cooperated), it seemed a good idea to post and share them.
