  Hi, I would love to hear your thoughts about this necklace.  The neckpiece is 16 in. & the pendant hands 9 inches.  The silver is probably 800-900. It's beautifully made & looks exquisite on, but I can't identify it, although I believe it's E. Indian in nature, due to the use of birds in it's design.  The crescent moon threw me though since that appeared more Islamic.  Any ideas?  I've never seen another piece like it in my many years of collecting.  Thanks for any help you can provide!  Lynne

  I have never seen anything like this either but it is very attractive.  It seems to have a vague Art-Deco geometry.  Perhaps it was made in Europe to appeal to the romantic view of the Near East?  Or perhaps it was made by an ex-patriot jeweler living abroad?  The intersection of two cultures sometimes produces very interesting results.

  Thank you both!  I thought Indian as well, but Edith's point is interesting too.  Hoping someone very familiar with Rajasthani or Gujrat pieces may see and comment.

  This is Indian and from Rajasthan, made from animal jewelry. It is the type of item worn by either an elephant or horse and would have been on forhead or down face. This is only a section or fragment of a larger piece.  I had something similar that i wore as a breast plate that came from an elephant. I'm trying to find a photo but I can not now but I know this is what this is.

  I think Linda is right. It is part of Rajasthani horse jewelry. Foron the forehead of the animal.

  You should also have a look at the beautiful jewelry for the "dans horses" from Egypt, for the horses of the Tekke-Turkoman, the elephants of the Indian Maharadja's, for the bulls of the Toda's, the cows in India and the cats in Old Egypt. All beautiful jewelry for loved and worshipped animals!
