A beauty from the Arabian Peninsula

Lovely large silver Koran holder. The dangles look Omani, but what about the hirz? It's about 12cm wide, around 130 grams. It does not open, but rattles (sounds like some small stones or metal pieces are trapped inside)...

  • Betty, this is special. I have a Yemeni Mansouri necklace with a hirz with crescent moon dangles. I have always associated the crescent- moon form, rightly or wrongly, with Yemen's Ottoman connections. Although Yemen, like North Africa, was regarded as 'Ottoman-lite', being so far away from Constantinople, it does seem to display some Ottoman features in its jewellery ... this being one .. and a second being the five-pointed star. I will try to find my necklace and make a photo. It would be interesting to hear what others think

  • Dear Betty; What a wonderful piece - congratulations! The dangles look very much Omani. However, the hirz is quite unusual. Having said that, I have an antique Omani necklace, which has the same swirl-design as the end pieces of this hirz on the reverse (it can be worn either way). Hence, I assume that it is from Oman. With kind regards. Peter

  • 2506049195?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024Betty, here is a picture of the hirz and dangles on my Mansouri necklace. Looking more closely at them, the crescent moons in the dangles are not exactly the same as yours so Peter may be right about your necklace. The hirz, too, on mine is of a much simpler construction. But it does have that simple wound wirework that you can see on yours. What about Hadramaut as the origin?

  • Many thanks, Thelma and Peter. I have also been thinking about the Hadramaut, Thelma, but all considered, I think Oman is more likely. I love the Mansouri necklace, especially the unusual pendants with the flowers and moons.

Like your piece, Peter my hire can be worn from either side (only the pendants with the crescent moons have a front and back). I have also been wondering if the pendants and hirz belong together...
