3-D cross

Unusual box-shaped Ethiopian cross with hinge. Incl. bail 8x6cm.I bought it out of curiosity because I have only ever seen one other piece like this, but I wonder whether it is traditional or made for the tourist market. This way or the other, the workmanship is very nice. Any thoughts?

  • Very interesting, looks like a cross between a Moroccan and Ethiopian cross. The raised box and the granulated points look Moroccan.  The hinge and the overall shape look Ethiopian.  It is attractive!

I do the same thing, buy out of curiosity.

  • Amongst the antique coptic crosses of Ethiopia there are raised crosses.  I cannot show you right now but will do so shortly.  This one however I do recognize as started production in about 2007 about as I than was shown a bag full of them in superior work but unfortunately not in silver for the tourist market.  The Ethiopian Dealer had come to Europe with them on order of a French dealer.

Did you test this one Betty?

  • Hi Ingrid - I somehow must have missed your very helpful comment.

I suspected this is a rather new piece. Will test it and let you know whether or not it is silver.

Do you happen to own an antique raised cross - I don't think I have ever seen one.

  • Bety, I do have them , will make a photo to morrow, and display it on the site.

    Gr. Ingrid.

  • How interesting. It is great that you are keeping abreast of new developments Ingrid!
