Treasures from Mali

These bracelets are all bought in Mali, although the middle piece is Mauritanian. The one in the front I bought on my first trip to Timbuktu in Oct. 2000, in the forge shop in the middle of the town, Tuareg Smiths have made it. It is of metal alloy, 3 cm width, and I have been wearing for years. Mauritanian styles are very present in Timbuktu, as the border is just a few hours in the desert .. and many Mauritanians used to live in Timbuktu at that time. Meanwhile most of my Mauritanian Timbuktu friends live in Mauritania. I have always loved this bracelet inspite of being only an alloy.

    Lovely bracelets! I have a beaded bracelet like yours that I bought half a life ago in Côte d'Ivoire, but if I remember correctly I was told that its from Mali.

    Lovely decorative edging on the cuff . I love the rounded edge I can imagine it to be pleasant to wear. After all  they are for wearing.

    Thank you Ingrid. I love this technique of squeezing the pattern from the back into the metal, so that hightened parts appear (sorry I forgot the correct Name of this). I have this bracelet since so Long, have been wearing it often and it still Looks fine.

    I just bought a pair of very old earrings from Mali ....... hope to get them soon

    (Fulani-Peul, also worn by the Sonrai and Tuareg), cheap material, but  nice.
