Palestinian Habbiyat Bracelet

This is a silver "aswareh habbiyat" bracelet made in Nablus, Palestine. Worn by villagers in the central hills of Palestine, usually in pairs. This is a heavy and old example. The coin is dated 1867 and I think the bracelet is probably late 19th century. In my opinion, the dangling coin and the wide decorated link really make this piece. The second photo shows how it falls over the hand when worn.

  • A very nice Habiyat bracelet Lynn. And it does look old enough to be from the 19th century. I also like the Russian coin and the link. Congratulations on this rare find. Br, sami
  • Thank you Sami.  This is extremely comfortable and has become one of my favorite bracelets.  I greatly admire your collection of Palestinian jewels.

  • Looks beautiful on! I must admit that I have never been hugely attracted to this type of bracelet, as I thought it may not look very elegant on. But you've convinced me otherwise.

  • These are very complex bracelets, very work intensive. Harder to make than your average bangle or cuff. From what I understand they are basically not being made anymore.

  • Thank you Preethi and Patricia.  Preethi I felt the same as you and that's why I wanted to post this "action shot" as I have been delighted with it in real life.  Patricia, they really are complex.  This one has the links totally closed and soldered on the inside of the of the bracelet and so is doubly complex and heavy.
