  • This is a beautiful cuff!! and not easy to find even not in the middle east!!

In the book Silberschmuck aus Agypten on page 19 is written only

Allegedy only for marrtied woman. Conical studs ending in small soldered spheres. They are supposed to represent breast and to ensure abundant milk for babies. From Nubia.

  • Thanks Carry - I'm glad to know its a rarer one. I thought the spikes were to ward off the evil eye but it is undeniable that they look like breasts so the explanation in Silberschmuck aus Agypten makes perfect sense! Any ideas about its age?

  • If there is no silver stamp in , it is most probably from before 1948.

  • There is a hallmark, you can see it here, https://ethnicjewels.ning.com/photo/upper-egypt-cuff-hallmark. It.s .800, with a lotus but I can't read the location or the date. Thanks.

  • Probably there will be in arabic a small word written where it is made! And I think 800 is maybe 80 for the percentage of silver!! From 1940 all the silver jewels had to contain a certain amount of silver I believe not less then 70 percent!! Before that it could be as low as 45 percent silver in the jewels!! Therefore often you can find old ethnic jewels with a very low percentage of silver
