Tibet coral

This is mosaic Tibetan coral made of coral fragments embedded together on top of coral beads. Coral was so highly valued by the Tibetans that they attempted to make use of every piece. Beginning with irregular shapes of fine pieces of coral, they filled in the gaps with a wax and pitch mixture called lakh and other coral bits. The result is a composite bead. Most of these were made around the mid 19th century, but some can be much older.

  • It may be a patch-up job where the bead making is concerned but the result is such an amazing texture. Give me this over perfectly smooth coral any day!

  • I agree, Frankie. Every bead is unique.
