  • what material is this? Nice colours.

  • it is hand made and colored from Mauritania women.sorry. i can really say nothing exact about the material. i got for years 3 pieces , it is still smelling good. the wite is wood. the red i guess is the same as in northafrica. a mix of spices, resine, wood, leaves and flowers.

this one only is left from the 3 and it looks that it is now sold.

  • i have a freind from Mauritania visiting me in june, she is art and antique trader. she sold me this, i aske her to bring me 1 or 2 if she has

  • HI Ait,

Interesting piece. Never seen it before...........Is it used on special occasions? Is there a long tradition of these? Last, what is the meaning of "skhab"?(forgot, what sort of wood? there arent many trees in Mauritania?)

  • hi chantal

it is a long tradition in all northafrica, some area they use parfumed hair rings, another area this kind , in different forms and materials. look at photos posted by edith. there is in tunisia and algerien semilar ones in another color and form. they wear it specialy in sommer

  • the wood , i have no idea. i m sorry but i will search in this direction

  • Thanks Ait. I knew of the perfumed hair rings and the cloves and the brown beads that Edith has shown but it was the red ones which I had never seen.........Nice that they are still made and worn.

  • chantal. ofcorse i know that you knew the brown skhab. iwanted to tell you that thi one semilar is. when i got it for 3 years, i felt in love with :-) was new for me and looked beautiful.
