Pendant

This khamseh was worn by a guest at a wedding in Mahdia. It is silver with gold wash, and is suspended from a pectoral chain attached at either shoulder to the "mdawr" fibulae.

Beautiful hand ... and the horse looks like a well-loved, child's pony with a decoration (hat?) on its head. Lovely piece. Is it old?

I think this chain with pendants is about mid 20th century. In terms of the horse, it may be true that this is not a particularly Berber symbol. But, it may explain a few things to remember the origins of the city of Mahdia. Mahdia was established by the Fatamids, and although there are Berber influences like everywhere in Tunisia, Mahdia is a very Arab city. I think one could argue that the symbol of the horse could be a result of this influence.
