Ceremonial pastoral staff with dragon-shaped handle; gold, rubies and enamel. Belonged to Parthenios, Greek-Orthodox Metropolitan (archbishop) of Caesarea/Kayseri. Made in a 'Rum' (Anatolian Greek) workshop of Istanbul/Constantinopel, in 1738. The handle is 15.5 cm in width. (Benaki Museum, Athens).

    Difficult to single out a piece from these 'Rum' workshops. They are all supreme examples of craftsmanship. But I love this one and particularly the dragons. I think it's the dragons teeth which makes them come alive. Presumably, the white colour is enamel.
