Ottoman Belt - Yemen

This is another Ottoman Belt with some Yemenite additions. This one too, was bought out of the Yemen.

  • This is very beautiful and interesting.  Am I right that the designs on top of the silver belt are cast?  They look a bit like the cast pieces from the southern Hadraumat.  The buckle with the hand reminds me of Libyan belts.  

  • Dear Lynn; Many thanks for your comments. Yes, they are cast silver and I would agree with you that the belt was most probably amended in the Hadramaut region. The buckle is typical Ottoman and you can find this particular pattern (hand) among others (fish, etc.) also in Turkish Ottoman belts. With kind regards. Peter 

    PS: By the way, when visiting Jerusalem, I found an almost identical hat as the one you sent me a link of, but with even more coins. I am now bidding online and also reserved the one from Jerusalem (a friend of mine will pick it up next time she is visiting Jerusalem). The price of the hat in Jerusalem is very good and not higher than the hat is estimated to fetch online. Anyhow, I could live with both of them - these hats are gorgeous and by the way, originate from the borders between Syria and Turkey.
