Late-Ottoman women's belts. Kars province / Turkey. Kars Provincial Museum.

Caucasian women's belts. From the Kars province, late 19th - early 20th century. With Anatolian/Ottoman (non-Caucasian) style elements such as the filigree buckle. The ethnic origins are not given (Armenian, Georgian, Circassian, Azeri, etc.), neither for the silversmiths, nor for the former owners. High grade silver, engraved & niello decoration. On exhibit in the Kars Museum. (both pictures: © Dick Osseman).

    Dear Jean-Marie; This used to be an Armenian belt and most probably, the owner decided for another buckle. The filigree buckle and fine dangles look a bit strange on this otherwise very sturdy belt. Nevertheless, the piece is extraordinary and surely would have an interesting story to tell.
