I think it is most interesting - partly in being so "simple".
I agree, Howah - both very remarkable features.
I was always attracted to the typical Kazakh as I had purchased my first piece as a 15 (see below) I still have this. This a fragment of what was a larger three part pectoral. I sold off my own larger one (in catalogue) and have several oddball types that i have kept instead. Until ten or fifteen years ago, these enameled pieces never came onto the market. The piece I sold Howah was one of the first of the type. The Central Asian dealer had no idea what it was and because of one good book I had on Kazakh I was able to identify it as such. These started appearing and in fact I have had this one and the one I sold to Pat as the only three I have sold. I had a great one on consigment that was one of the best examples or most blitzy examples because it resembled the one published like it. However reviewing both this one and Pat's and Howah's pieces I like these best because there is something very primitive and rural and very pasayk carpet about these. They remind me of ancient jewelry of the area so I believe these are from that design traditon because the enameling reminds me of the felts so much from Siberia. If we look on the map (have not done that in a while, maybe this area is nearer to that region then the more typical pieces (photo) My original draw to Kazakh jewelry and much of what I collect is granulation,, as a jeweler I specialized in that technique when I was fabricating. So most of what I like best has alot of surface design to it.

These earrings are the only pieces I have from same area and will post yet another pair I sold with very interesting shapes. The dots on these are like a textile I have which is Siberian or Eskimo with the dots which I believe are similar to points are put on representing moon or star locations. Also similar style tatoos were found on some of the Urumchi mummies. Alot of these early drawings were akin to a type of language , similar to what is found on carpets .. It would be interesting to study up on this one particular style of Kazakh jewelry since it is very unlike the typical designs.
These are indeed extremely interesting pieces, Linda, and as you say not what one would typically think of as Kazakh! It's very good to see them posted. And I love the one you bought as a 15-year old.
