Embroidered ‘şalvar’/baggy trousers. Balıkesir / Turkey. Ca. 1925-1950.

A traditional embroidered ‘şalvar’ (baggy trousers, for women) from the central district of the Balıkesir province. Ca. 1925-1950. Part of a women’s ensemble, with a ‘gömlek’ (shirt)alvar made of the same fabric (striped silk) and adorned with similar ‘goldwork’ embroidery in ‘tutturma’-technique (applied cord). (Inv.nr. $al025 - Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).
