Dogonsun 1

Pendant of the Dogon, Mali, ca 5,5 cm without the leather bail. I heard that the originals have a brass bail which was replaced in most cases by the leather with the Kauri like here on this one, as the original brass bail broke after use.The Dogon live in Mali, around the Bandiagara mountains, main places are Bandiagara and Sangha. The pendant is quite heavy.

  • Superb.  I love these.

  • @Thank you Chantal. I showed it earlier already,  but removed it after a while. Now I needed that Dogon sun for something, and decided to post it here again... This one is really a Beauty.

  • Does it signify or protection amulet? Is it worn by men or women or both? It comes over to me as very male. So strong. Even though it carrier is replaced by leather, the cowry bells finish it very esthetical.

A lovely piece, and I think a must have if you collect from the Dogon people. Well done Eva, to show us.

    For me a impressive piece.

  • @Ingrid: thank you. I do not know exactly. The Dogon live their own very spiritual life, different from all the other ethnies in Mali. But I am convinced  it is a protective amulet. The Dogon universe is quite different from all the other ethnies in Mali.... and I do not know it s  secrets. So I cannot tell you whether it is worn by men or women or both.........
