Alevism (Turkish: Alevîlik) is a religious group with origin in Shia Islam that combines Anatolian folk Sunni with Sufi elements such as those of the Bektaşi Sufi Order. Believers live almost entirely in Turkey, with minorities in the Balkan, Crimea, the Caucasus, Cypus, Hungary, Iran, Tatarstan and the Turkish Diaspora.
Alevism is also a group identity, which is variously interpreted as cultural (emphasizing special traditions of poetry, music and dance), humanistic and/or political – whether leftist or Kemalist (in Turkey). Their number is currently estimated about 15-25 million worldwide.
