  • lovely work with the tiny dots forming the triangles. I like that.

  • The Kazakh tradition seems to be wed to that design.  The pyramid shape represents the sacred Altai mountains, the source of the Turkmen, at least the source within their jewelry making memory ;)   The replication of the mountain shape in those tiny delicate dots shows amazing skill.

  • I am wondering if the gold tone part of this piece is perhaps made from thin gilded silver with a repousse technique to form the design and then cut and appliquéd to the 'enameled' brownish background?

  • Some of these were hand done- the older ones- while many are actually cast from an original.  These are filled with plaster inside the silverwork to help them hold their shape.

  • Yes, I have seen some of those, Hillary.  I like repousse work, but not the things that are rather hurriedly cast.  The modern casts are often not of the quality of the older cast metal work.  This work is rather thin and hollow, just as I would expect it to be if it is not cast.
