Rare and beautiful examples from Sirouan mountains in Southern Morocco

These sticks were used to apply kohl.

Kohl was used as a protection from the sunlight and across many cultures the belief that kohl could ward off eye diseases and protect against the 'evil eye', which relates to jealousy.

Thank you for your interest, I'll make a start soonish. Disclaimer: My collection is fairly eclectic, antique and recent, African and Asian. It is just such a wonderful subject, with such a depth of meaning.

Dosnt matter if they are not old, its your collection and youve sourced them & get pleasure from them & youve obviously done  some research on them too no doubt..and because you like them its part of your soul,I have one myself I just adore for its design alone & Ive seen some really beautiful ones in antique shops I would have loved to purchase but they were out of my price range... a question though one you might know the answer to...how does one know the difference between a Kohl bottle and a snuff bottle & a perfume bottle as they all have a long glass lentils on the bottles lid & I know some snuff bottles have a small scoop spoon especially the Chinese & Japanese ones did..but I see orientel ones without a spoon just a spike like these sticks here have and I know perfume bottles also have a stick so could they all be universal used & utilized for either of these product?.....Just curious..

I can tell, beautiful wear and patina. I don't know if I'll ever come across even a single one, but definitely something to keep an eye out for.
