Curious Hallmark on Chinese Straits Belt

Hello, I'm a new member here on the site, though I've browsed it for quite a long while!

I was hoping that perhaps someone might have some information in regard to a Chinese Straits(I believe it's Indonesian) belt and buckle, which I had recently purchased with intent to sell.

The point which puzzles me is that the rear of one of the belt segments(some are unfortunately disconnected, with four segments being slightly different to the remaining ones), is marked with a bear shape, followed by BNF and then by ALPACC, corresponding to the Berndorf Metalware Factory circa 1875-80(though it could be a little later), a German Factory widely know to produce this material.

I was wondering if anyone would have any idea as to why such a mark would appear on this belt, given that China had perfected the use of nickel silver centuries prior to when Germany developed it?
