"Penny, what stumps me about your piece is also the lack of a plug on the back, if this were an ear ornament. Since I'm making other wild guesses, could this have been produced to be sold to westerners?"

Preethi replied to Penny Fidler's discussion and what about this one?
"I'm not aware of belt buckles or brooches of the type, but that doesn't mean they may not exist. I can also imagine someone trying to save a single earring by modifying it. Personally, I'm saving my single earrings for possibly making…"

Penny Fidler replied to Penny Fidler's discussion and what about this one?
"Yes I see..... I was forgetting how big some of these ornaments can be :) thank you Preethi for the reference although this does not explain the loop / pin on the back unless, at some later date, the ear stem was removed and the loop / pin added?…"

"Interesting! I know these as ear ornaments from central India, but this looks like it has been modified for use as a belt and brooch. Does the loop and pin seem like part of the original piece or could they have been added on later?"

Betty replied to Penny Fidler's discussion and what about this one?
"To my knowledge brooches are not traditionally worn in Ethiopia, though they are made and worn today in modern versions of tribal jewellery. Still, I would be very surprised if this was an Ethiopian piece. Do you know how large this piece is?"
