Mystery Belt

Mystery Belt. The belt is "golden" but I would be shocked to find that it was made of gold. Can any of you shed some light on this pretty thing? My dimmest memory tells me Philippines; perhaps that is where it was purchased but not made? Thanks!

Sorry, Annie, I referred to you as Annie Bloem in a previous message but do know it is "Boehm". I have also been looking for the very first message you sent me personally but cannot find it - have sent you an email about that. Best, Joost

after the BSGB meeting in Whitby next weekend I shall get updated on all aspects of Jet and shall post a short summary of the information!

meanwhile the basic test usually recommended to distinguish jet from other black gem substances is to find an inconspicuous corner to rub against unglazed white porcelain- real jet leaves a brownish streak, -glass, stone and harder substances dont streak. jet is imitated with vulcanite, gutta percha, horn, ebony, "bog oak", shale, glass, plastic, pressed stained horn, can be confused with black coral, etc etc.

what's harder to tell is the age of the beads, which means studying styles, designs and techniques.
