meanwhile the basic test usually recommended to distinguish jet from other black gem substances is to find an inconspicuous corner to rub against unglazed white porcelain- real jet leaves a brownish streak, -glass, stone and harder substances dont streak. jet is imitated with vulcanite, gutta percha, horn, ebony, "bog oak", shale, glass, plastic, pressed stained horn, can be confused with black coral, etc etc.
what's harder to tell is the age of the beads, which means studying styles, designs and techniques.
