Traditional festive costume – Biga Pomak / Turkey – young girl.

A traditional festive costume for (not yet betrothed) young women. From the Pomak villages near Biga (Çanakkale prov.). Mid-20th c. In some villages, this setting is used : the triangular waist cloth is worn on the front, on top of the apron (this ‘arkalık’ is generally worn on the backside); and the lavishly adorned ‘imitation hair’ (black cotton plaits, attached to the hat) which is worn on top of the white head scarf and is fully visible. I named this: 'setting B (with headscarf). (Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).

    The 'Biga Pomaks’ are Bulgarian Muslims, who emigrated from southern Bulgaria to their actual settlements in the Biga district (Çanakkale province, NW Anatolia) in 1878 (and following years). 

    There is still a large Pomak minority living in Bulgaria nowadays (in the Rhodopes Mountains).
