I just saw one of these posted for sale and was appalled by the high price and its description as "late 19th-early 20th century." Not so! This necklace is mid to late 20th century. I know this BECAUSE it has a row of stars...the star design was developed by an Italian jeweler from the goldsmith school in Tripoli sometime in the 1930s. Earlier models did not have the row of stars. I suspect that these are still being made. I purchased my necklace used according to its weight. These necklaces, like so many Tunisian pieces, are not rare, but are under-represented in western collections. A similar necklace does appear in the Bir collection.
I was blown away by the price on this one as well but I think it represents the western demand for Tunisian pieces. I think this may be a hard sell at that price although many of the other pieces on that site have sold for relatively high prices.
