  • Wow, you are right, this is the twin of my bracelet! Congrats - looks in great shape.

Did you clean it to high shine, or was it already like this? I always wondered what is below the layers of dirt, but eventually decided not to clean mine. But it also looks great when shiny.

One more question, Lynn: dies it have a pin to close it? If it is not too much trouble, I'd appreciate a pic  from the inside.

  • Thank you for your comments Betty!

I cleaned it, I could not help myself.  It was filthy and I have a thing about dirt -- I am paranoid about heavy metals, cadmium, etc in the dirt on old pieces, and I have little kids.  Once I cleaned it I polished a small part of it with a rouge cloth and I liked what I saw so I kept going.  I like the contrast of the parts that take a high shine, vs the brown of the wire applique, and the soft yellow of the discs applique.

I will take photos of the inside for you today -- it is amazingly knackered in there with some wear-through of the inner metal to expose the applique and there is a bit of separation between the parts.  Nothing that prevents wearing it.  This originally had a pin to close but much of the inner tube part has been lost to the ravages of desert life.  I will take the pics for you.

  • I does look gorgeous Lynn. Congratulations. By the way, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with cleaning antique jewelry. Such pieces deserve that one sees the entire intricacy of the workmanship, which in this piece is really nice. I love it! Peter

  • I'm sure the person who received this cuff was delighted. Those multiple bands with detailed and different patterns must have made it very desirable and valuable. I have a Koran box decorated in the same way... with multiple banding .. made for a member of the Rashaida in Saudi Arabia.

  • Thank you Thelma and Peter for your kind comments!  Thelma have you posted photos of the Koran box?

Betty, here are the photos of the inside of the bracelet.

  • 2506021570?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024Lynn, I'll put a photo up again for you to compare the multiple banding. I put it up a couple of years ago but then, like Peter, found copies in many places on the internet ... so I decided to take the photos down. The problem is keywords which are picked up by search engines. Nowadays, instead of precisely describing the pieces, I use headings such as Shaved etc to try to avoid the problem.

  • Wow Thelma, how absolutely gorgeous.  Easily the most stunning example of this type I have seen.  I don't condone the photo theft, but I can see why people wanted the photo.  Worthy of a museum!

  • Thank you very much for the photo showing the bracelet's inside, Lynn. It's similar to mine. It seems this type of cuff originally had a pin closure.

I have been wondering if it was deliberately removed -  perhaps to fit on the arm of a grown woman. These pieces were given to  (often very young) Rashaida brides and my cuff would most likely be to wide to fit on a young girl's arm without falling over her hand. But with the pin closure it would perhaps been OK.

Anyway just a wild thought as I have seen a few pieces all with defunct pin closures....

As for the cleaning: I certainly meant no criticism. I actually quite like your cleaned cuff! It's a matter of personal taste; both cleaning and not cleaning has its pros and cons. Personally I do not follow any school religiously. Some pieces I clean, other I prefer (almost) "uncleaned".

  • @ Thelma: your prayer box is out of this world! I love it!

Thanks for alerting us to the problem photos being used without permission. It's a good idea to use titles that nobody will search for. I shall copy this method from you if you do not mind :-)

  • Lovely cuff Lynn, very refined patterns and so well executed.  I love all the different patterns on one cuff.  done with care and pride.  I still cannot figure out how they ever got to fit, because they are one piece of silver, no hinge to open up.  And they are very tough to open or close with the pin.  A riddle to me. Mine do have a compleet different pattern as one can see on my placed photos.  Well done,  a set would make it a beautiful collectors set. Gr. Ingrid.
