Kuchi Choker

A Kuchi necklace from Pakistan or Afghanistan, from the 1980s. On the original stringing, which is decorated with gold metal embroidery, blue seed beads, and pom-poms. The necklace is made by hand, not cast, and covered in stamped appliques, glass stones, and many bells. Ex Nancy Conklin's collection.

    This is a very lovely little necklace, Lynn. I love the way the maker has decorated the buttons with three small blue seed beads. Indeed I like so many aspects of this piece. The metal parts of the necklace seem quite old ... older than the 1980s. Do you think it is possible that the remains of an older necklace have been used to construct this one? I'm interested too in the collar .. its shape and decoration reminded me of the silver torques owned by wealthy Pashtun nomads.... and the three little pom-poms look very like the three rosettes placed on those torques.
