Dear Betty, here are your camel bone amulets and their uses. These I collected in about 1975 but to my shame I used many of them for their antique trade beads. I have seen them worn by the women of Sidamo, and Arsi Negelle.Ethiopia. I have seen the new shapes some with the cross shape on top, not correct though as they are not christian customes. Nevertheless, everything customs and fashion blend through each other. I do not know if the new ones are just for tourist adaption.(I am gone from Ethiopia quite a njmber of years, but if they are still used how are they wearing them? because the glass trade beads have also disappeared!

My bones came with some short leather (guts?) strings attached...
I have seen the newer bones for sale, as you say, some cross shaped. I think they might have been made as souvenirs even. However, they are quite different from the older ones.
Very nice ones with the chains, I like them a lot. I have seen cross-shaped ones for sale on Ebay some months ago, but I could not be enthused about them and did not buy any. Somehow, without knowing, I felt, they are " not correct".........
PS: it gives me an idea to wear mine again after a loooong break...........

Eva I must say that the cross ones are a bit heavy, but I found some old cross bone ones on pinterest so they did exist in the olden days as well, it tells the story that habbits(or fashions) gets adapted. Just like the hairpins some made them into a show of heaving crosses tiny crosses added to them.
