A lovely refined choker from Ethiopia. woven with tiny silver Jimma beads, antique glass tjechian trade be beads and an antique beautiful telsum fully decorated with fillegrain and granulate rosets. These telsums are mostly very light weight . the box on which it lays is thin silver filled with charcoal to keep it from denting. This piece is done by the original owner herself. a skill like knitting or crocher.
I acquired this pc. today but did have a couple of times similar pieces (perhaps 2) but sold them.
These type of weaving with beads was done in Europe in the 1910-20 ( I had a belt,necklace done in this type it was especially popular in the charleston time. )mine was with pink tiny beads and done with black spiders. I think I sold it. In case I do find it will still post it. This pieces dates also from that period. 1920 about.
Thank you for the picture Ingrid! I have a single telsum like this but missing one of the decorated rosets. I wondered how it could be worn - so now I know! Are the threads cotton?
Thank you Charlotte, and yes it is done with cotton. Nothing uncommon that one of the granulates are missing, because they are separately soldered onto the little box. Gr. Ingrid.
Hi Betty, the piece is made in Ethiopia, but the weaving technic simular to the style at that time done in Europe. So I do not know if the missionaries brought this type of beading over or was it done vice versa, like the missionaries did bring this technic back to Europe. We always learn both ways..
