  • Great beads! I love the color. Are they still called skunk beads when they have pink on them?
  • I think that the term skunk is from the North American trade.

I also hear these referred to as eye beads or Venetian wound glass beads with lampwork applied dots!

Beads always have a lot of names, this can make it a tricky subject to get to grips with!

    Lovely strand K !!

  • Thans all - Yes technically they are Wound and decorated Lampwork beads made in Venice dating back to 1700's and 1800's and early1900's. Per Picard's book similar strands were noted in the Lewis and Clark and Levin Collections and for trade.
  • Is this the same Picard as the museum/ store in Carmen Valley, CA?  When I was living in Pacific Grove, CA, I used to work for him by taking beads home to restring onto cable wire.  He could not believe how much I would get done in an hour!  Such a nice man.  I have some vaseline glass beads I got from him.  I don't think I ever made any money, just traded time to get beads!  Those were fun times.
  • Wow - yes same Picard.  I live nearer San Francisco - so his museum/store is about a 2 hour drive from me.  I have know John and Ruth for many hyears - and yes great people!
  • I live 30 minutes away and have also bought many wonderful things from the Picards. They have a website now for buying books and beads. www.picardbeads.com
  • I lived in Pacific Grove for almost 6 months in 2000 and used to work in Carmel.  I stumbled across the Picard's Museum while house sitting in Carmel Valley.  What a pleasant discovery, and such nice people.  It had been years since I'd been up that way until May 2010, when my husband and I did the San Francisco Bead and Design show.  I do love that city, unfortunately, it's more of a two day drive, so we just show at the Pasadena Bead and Designs Show now.  I won't be there this year as I've got a little girl and a 6 month old son.  He'd be fine at the show, but she gets into everything!  One of her first words was "beads".
  • Well next time you are up this way do call me!  LOL about your girls first word...already an addict I see. I opened my store in 1992...geez a long time ago..met John and Ruth shortly after that.
