Ethnic Jewels

An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

Made from copper-nickle alloy, this anklet comes from an island just off the northeast coast of Java. It probably dates to the first half of the 20th century. Many similar anklets were crudely executed, but this one has nice workmanship.

This anklet is based in earlier Javanese forms.  The slightly graduated globular forms at the ring of the anklet are similar to ancient ones.

And here is a bracelet from the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art dating from the Central Javanese period between 8th and 10th Century CE.
