  • @ Ait Ouakli - do you have any idea how old these beads are?

  • Hi Frankie, i knew with this piece you will get out your silence :-)

it is from the art deco periode

  • LOL, A O!

Actually I have only just been able to get online in my Bulgarian cottage here after leaving the UK for a while - that was the real reason for my unusual silence. Now I feel as though I have regained my right arm!

Somewhere on this site I show an old necklace of similar beads. They have quite a few abrasions but I believe to be from the late 19thC - early 20th Century. And I suspect my amber to have come from off the East Coast ( Dogger Bank) of the UK rather than the Baltic.

Do you know whether the bracelet you show is on its` original stringing? If so, what is it, please?

I have been converted to this type of amber after not wanting to look at any kind other than butterscotch.

  • sure Frankie. i can tell you exactly . it is original.this cut is called koenigsberger amber cut. koengsberg was one of the famoust preuss cties, since 1946 called kalininigrad .it is near poland and lituania.

this cut form goes back to the pharao time and the romains built the famous road until balticum sea just for it.

there is archeological amber jewelry found with this cut art over 2000 years old.

this way of stringin with the lock in silver gilded was famouse in art deco time. this piece exactly is made that time

  • Actually I was wondering what the string is made of, A O. My similar beads are strung on what I think is linen.

I have two necklaces of Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) amber, both faceted. They are both ancient - maybe even from Roman times, restrung of course.

  • F c,  difficult to know the age , i saw identic ones found in archeological sites and in museums

I know that hobby archeologs are still finding them and some gold and silver too. The area is full with treasur hunters and they find interesting pieces

  • Yes, I understand the difficulty about ageing amber. So much depends on how it has been preserved. One of mine was said to have been "discovered" in Kaliningrad In 1938 but I don`t know exactly what that means. Maybe you remember you said it had a carapace.

  • mine ist not hanf, it looks more silk or silk cotton mix

yes i remember, i wrote you crust, it is when the amber stays exposed to light, sun and air. it gets dry in the superficie. the contact with skin makes it smooth again. it is why, after cuting and polishig of amber, there is a last step wich is polishing again with leather

  • if reported " found in kaliningrad" it means a lot. in this subject, i m carefull. all is possible

in the 2 nd world war and even before, many families hided their jewelry, dechets and expensive items in the earth and holes. amber was not that time an expensive item, few people took care of hiding it.

other side, it was a trade material since the vikings time and it was a kind of money transiting everywhere in the area. it was also a kult and ceremonial good and more more...

so, the conclusion is. it was a dayls used and moved material and was in each house and worn, burned used from each persone. many peices got hidden in the earth or between stones, in the constructions, boxes. in or not in purpose

  • Fascinating, I had imagined a possible history of it in my head. Extra information is that It has been in the possession of a former Soviet official`s family since that time (1938) without seeing the light of day. Which means that the carapace it acquired was obtained before that time.

The seller is a neighbour of them and seems very sure of that part of its` background.

Thank you, Ait Ouakli. You enthuse me once again!
