Is this North African?

For the North African experts, a lovely necklace found on ebay France. The silver pieces inlaid with carnelian are particularly outstanding, but, is this a traditional North African piece or a melange. I don't know, just asking.

  • Oke Ait,  the agreb shapes of beads from Mauritania must be the once I had in mind.  How nice to  know that their shapes are a reference to this water containers.  Actually also in Ethiopia they have these kind of water vessels.  Thank you for the explanations.  This for sure will stay with me, I love the idea that they respect water, the life line so much.  Gr. Ingrid.

Ps.  having it in front of the car  to keep it cool, is so inginious.  This is done a lot by the truck drivers in Ethiopia, they have p.e. bottles with robe around.  The wet the robe and than hang it outside their truck to cool it.

  • HI Ingrid, you are right, they could be ethiopian, even they look ethiopian more than asians. the beads like this are easy, simpl and universel. 2 half rounds leaded together ,covered in the midle with wire. 2 holes in the extremities decored with wire or tube.

the one you think mauritanian are not. you mean the famouse "agreb" what means a recipiet for wattermade of a goat leather. it keeps the watter resh for days. they trait the inside with a black substance" tar" . when it is full it has the same form.

watter is a synonyme of wealth, fertility, life, better future,fertility......it is why they use the full agreb symbol2506018814?profile=original

  • Hi Ait, I do have those large beads also in medium size, from Ethiopia.  In Ethiopia those large beads are often in couples with a large red resin bead on a long string.  Either, one silver and two red resin, or  two silver and one red resin.  The beads on the far end, I do meant Mauritania( and not Chad as I mentioned earlier, with these flat sides, are these not the typical beads I have seen passing through on the photos going for Mauritanian beads?  Gr. Ingrid.

  • i think all the stones are agate, the big one looks amber but i have tendence to indien agate. the african amber has holes not in the circle outside but in the flat surface.only mauritania have it outside but in square pieces with 4 until 6 holes

the big silver pieces are typical central asia, afghan, tadjik, turkomen. th eclasp is typical  indien. the 2 small silver beads , i cannot identifie

  • I think this necklace is a fantasie build up form different beads, such as the large silver beads could be Ethiopian or Somalian, the back silver beads are what I think specific from Chad? (These beads were a year ago lots passing by on our Ethnic Jewels site. The carnelians are and were common in Africa and Asia.  The only beads I do see as Asian are the  main items of this necklace.  The center bead looks like an amber bead with its double holes.  Like Patricia suggests definitely a melange of what the maker had in the house.

  • I tend to agree, Rabah. The silver pieces look Central Asian particularly the table cut carnelian. Must be a melange
  • it is not northafrican. it is central asian

  • Interesting piece, Patricia!
I am absolutely no expert, neither when it comes to North Africa nor Central Asia, but my first association when seeing the silver elements with Carnelian, was: Central Asia, or maybe Iran? But But let's hear what other will say who are more knowledgeable ... I am quite curious now...
