  I am now looking at this only provisionally and for the first time, Isabel. The way the object is close is typically Indian - no doubt about that. Most likely the whole object is Indian - I see nothing about the decoration which would prohibit that thought. Are the pins which look like nails actually SCREWS? If the object is Indian, then the screw would open by turning it in the OPPOSITE way of a western screw (and vice versa when you close it). Try that, gently. If not Indian, I would think it must be close - possibly Pakistani. But my first impression is that it is Indian. Would it be the size of an anklet? For they typically  do open and close in this way. Perhaps compare also with whoever else had such an object - cannot now remember! As I say: a provisional judgement!

  Thank you Joost! My feeling is that they are Indian...I think that originally they were screws but they were replaced by pins because I have bought other pieces from the same source ( and those are undoubtedly Indian) and they have replaced the original screws for pins (I don't can figure out why)...I would like to know from wich region in India...

  I'll look for the region later! Now really must be off to bed - it's nearly 2 am here!! Glad to be of assistance. What you say further about the pins fits in exactly with what does happen to Indian jewellery.

  Indian and silver-plate. I am this time quite sure of asserting both of these things! Still can't help you further concerning the area, but will keep trying, or I shall come across something similar some time!
