Huge tunisian silver belt buckle

This is a very scarce example of the big and complete tunisian belt buckle that comes from the middle coutryside of the country. The upper part (the circle) is quite common in large areas of tunisia and is also very common in famous ethnic jewelry collections. this one is huge and was worn by women from the coutryside around the city of SFAX. It hangs very low and supports many khamsas and other pendants. it has traces of gilding Around 70 cm long and weights in excess of 700 grams

  • This is fantastic. I have some khamsa pendants that are very similar-I will post them.
  • Are the pendants all incised?  Do you have a photo of this being worn traditionally?

  • yes hillary the pendants are all incised and evry tiny bit, pendant or link bears a hallmarkn though i was not able to decipher it.

Actually i only know of photos and old postcard showing the round buckle being worn; the round buckle (the upper part) is in fact part of the daily adonement of contyside adornment

Even if i dont have a serious confirmation i suspect this very big buckle to be worn only in special occasion for it is very heavy and would prevent any woman to go by her daily business with ease and comfort.
