Ethnic Jewels

An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

This bracelet recently appeared on eBay.  The casting is near-identical to the beautiful Benares enameled bracelets from India with the pink lotus flowers, but the enameling is quite different.  Does anyone know what this is?

Thank you Frankie, I have the same feeling.  I think they put the old molds into production to create a beautiful bracelet with nice etching, but exponentially less enamel work.  The only part I don't like is the bulging bug-eyes of the elephants.

This sent me scuttling off to re-examine my own Benares bracelets.
It`s not the first time I`ve seen bracelets similar to the one in the photos. My own feeling is that they should more properly be called Varanasi bracelets because I can`t help but feel they are more recent production.
The craftsmanship appears to me to be less skilled than on the old Benares bracelets, often a casualty of a more modern desire to create a greater turnover.
But this is all surmisal, Lynn. Properly informed info may well tell you differently.
