concerning my picture of 2 necklaces from Sarawak-

colourful necklaces worn everyday in Sarawak -these were seen around the neck of a Kelabit cafe owner in Bario, a north Sarawak village where they live in longhouses, grow rice and pineapples, with an airstrip in this jungle mountain area.
the beads are a mixture of old traded heirloom beads and recent versions made in Java.
i just came home from a bead conference in Sarawak, Borneo.

THREADING & KNOTTING TECHNIQUES for designing and repairs-

Put your ethnic beads together so the jewellery components will last-

Its noticeable many of the bead necklaces people have made for selling appear to be on stiff cable. Although its easy to use, this is not usually the best material for threading, specially for the ethnic beads which may have very large or tiny crooked holes...

I teach a number of different methods using very reliable threads and also knotting which gives a piece a nice soft authentic drape and feel, and…

help wanted please- costume for an african heroine of the 1800's

A friend is costuming a short film and wants to represent "yaa Asantewaa" a queen mother and special legendary heroine of the 1800's in Kumasi.
She only found one hazy B+W photo portrait.
my guess is shiny Gold in quantity, multiple big bead bracelets, and maybe yellow+red bicone King beads? Obvious Krobo powder glass hadnt been developed yet.
If we get a grip on a big theme then we can improvise details to create the look-
Suggestions please!

Help! How to clean jewellery from Afghanistan, Morocco,Ethiopia etc like many mixed metal pieces members show here?

I've rediscovered my stash bought mostly in the '90s including large amulet cases with dangles, metal drops, chains , lapis slabs, glass and coral bits set in shallow mounts with what looks like bitumen, some enamel etc. and if I ever want to show them off or do business with them then they must look glowing not drab, whether the metals themselves are silver, tin, nickel, brass, copper, iron, gilded, or a mix..

Vinegar? Salt? Lemon juice? silver dip? detergent? woolwash? ultrasonic?… Continue

Article about Chevron beads

"Jewellery History Today" is a slim magazine published by the Society of Jewellery Historians in UK and circulated to its members.

I've contributed an article in the latest edition (issue 9 Autumn 2010 ISSN 2042-8529) entitled "the Chevron bead and its simulants" with illustrations of a number of individual beads from my collection.

I hope some people here will be able to see it!

It had to be severely limited to 2 pages so some information…

I may be helpful if you need to identify your beads more accurately.

As a specialist bead dealer, researcher and author of well over 30 years I can be useful here correcting some descriptions to the greatest possible accuracy.

Too many dealers dont know, make things up or repeat what they've heard without checking the information. If you want to catalogue your own collection or sell, you will have a lot more respect if you can verify your information.

I'm not attacking anyone, just want to encourage people to value the beads they love and describe… Continue
