Massa attribution

Posted on May 18, 2014 at 10:21 16 Comments

I keep on finding once in a while some Moroccan Berber pieces attributed as being Massa. I have found though very little about these but just a brief note in Saad Al-Jadir's Kunuz stating that the style is unique and departs from those in neighbouring areas. I have also heard that there may be some phoenician influence. Any ideas?

Please find this link I have just found to a collection of Yemeni jewels the Spanish foundation Carlos Ballesta. Not extremely large but quite nice:

Book of Siwa Oasis

For those of you who have an interest and do not know it already there is a fairly new book on Siwa Oasis. It was published in 2011 by the name of "Sand and Silver. Jewellery, Costume and Life in Siwa Oasis" ISBN 978-0-9569963-0-5. Its author is Margaret Mary Vale and it was published by Kelim Press. It is soft cover.

It is not certainly a "bible" on jewellery but covers many aspects of the life in the oasis of Siwa (customs, uses, how life has changed, jewellery, materials, etc)…

Jewellery from Eastern Africa.

For those members who have an interest in jewellery from Eastern Africa or simply enjoy wonderful pictures, both of pieces and people, I would recommend this link: www.davidserra.es. The catalog on this kind of jewellery, which can be downloaded, is particularly good.
