Indian (?) belt

"(I commented on the new photo of the complete piece - which I believe is an excellent Indian belt.)"

"You are lucky, Becky, that, with your size, you can use it for its original purpose, and it will be splendid to wear. I think with women, in particular, belts look great as they accentuate the waist - I am sure that ultimately this has to do with…"

"Thanks for the information. Regatdless of origin, I love the piece and am hoping to actually use it as a belt. Before taking steps to "open" it I wanted to be sure it was a belt, not a necklace. Appreciate the feedback. How I became fond…"

"Yes, I agree: I too like the Sri Lankan necklaces - quite apart from any other consideration! And there is a resemblance in the braiding, but they do otherwise seem quite different: very much more like actual necklaces also in having more…"

"Love those necklaces! The thicker braiding does, indeed, look like the thicker braiding of the belt."

"I fear I disagree, Preethi, or at least need more persuasion. (1) This would be quite unduly large for a necklace: most belts were about 75 cm, so  80 cms, as here, is ample: we are looking at a belt (the front part is typically that of a belt,…"

"This could be a Sri Lankan necklace that was slid down the head to wear, and sat low below the neck. The granulation work in the middle is very reminiscent of Sinhalese granulation work, also found in some Tamil jewellery, with which it had a shared…"

"The thinner chain definitely looks Rahasthani as does the  buckle -- obviously an Indian belt after a different fashion. Lovely!"

"When all is said and done I think it is clearly an Indian silver belt. The lock at the front is certainly Indian (mind the screwing when you open it!). The "woven"/"knotted' thick pieces of chain on each side of the lock look…"

"I just put up a picture of the entire piece. As has already been pointed out - a more traditional belt would have multiple thin chains joined together at intervals by medallions of some sort. I will make sure to turn the screw the opposit way from…"

"Becky if you try to OPEN the central part, be sure to turn it in the OPPOSITE direction from what you would do in the west. This is vital: Indian screws always go in the opposite direction. If you do it the western way you will ruin the thread - and…"

Road to Morocco

Posted on August 19, 2011 at 2:14 3 Comments

Hi Everyone,
I have finally been able to arrange some time off work for late November-early December. We are going to be in Marrakech for a week, but hope to travel before for another week. Where should we go to look for pieces, what should we see, eat, etc.

Thanx for letting me know about this auction.

I can't comment on the jewelry itself, seems to be genuine but rather common, the set with the frame and the velvet humanoid model is really beautiful and would be the main drag for anyone interested in buying (more than the jewelry).

A bit overpriced though

When i go back to morocco i live just feww blocks away from their gallery. i always check their catalogs but have never contacted them or gave hem a visit.

Anyway i am not sure they provide te best service as thhere is at least 70% mislabelling and a lot of copies and forgeries among their items on offer.

I dont think they can be of any value for abroad custommers

Hi, I think you asked me about buckles and I have to admit that Sarah would be the expert there, I know she gathered one from Essaouria the last time we were there and I see she has been corresponding with you about them. The dog that you see in my picture is actually a dog who belongs to a rather nasty dealer in Essaouria whom we have deemed the meanest man in Morocco, the dog, however, is rather sleepy and mild and is the fattest dog in Morocco. I am sorry to hear about your dog,I know that it is very difficult to lose a friend like that. Right now I have eight dogs and am rather overwhelmed to say the least . They are papillons and are all related to one another. Sarah is the expert on Moroccan stuff, I must say I am a mere collector with not too much knowledge.
