  • I bought this cuff in Yemen, some years ago. I read that maybe they are ethiopian? Any opinions?

  • I have noticed that very often jewelry designated as Yemeni and Rashaida also fall into the Ethiopian designation, particularly the bracelets. Maybe it is an "East Africa" design thing -- this style can be made throughout the region.

  • I just added a comment to the other Picture, that this is also Ethiopian style, and I assume there had been very Close trade between These countries. Now, I read the comments below. which confirm it once more........thanks

  • Yes Patricia, these bracelets are also made in Ethiopia ( I do have several in my collection in diferent qualities, from little silver (more nickel) and several in good silver about 800/1000.  And they are not only worn by the RashAida but also by the the female population from Wollo through Argobba through Harague and the town Harrar.

  • Thank you all for your comments! I didn't see them when I was in Ethiopia, but of course that makes sense. There's really a small water gap between Ethiopia and Yemen!

  • To my knowledge this type of bracelet can be found all along the shores of the Red Sea Coast, in Yemen as well as in Eritrea and Ethiopia (as Eva and Ingrid said), but also Sudan and Egypt. I would be very interested to know if they are actually made in each of these localities or just in one region and then traded from there...

  • Betty,I think it is a case of both. Because there are some of lesser material and not so nicely made and I do not think if a piece is not nicely made they wouldn.t import them.  In the antique market in Addis it is known as a Wollo bracelet. I do have a couple of sets some stunning and some of a lesser silver alloy and poorer workmanship. So yes, I think they are being made by different location silversmiths. Will place some different qualities after a couple of hours.
