Yemen Jewel

This is a recent purchase. I adore the intricate granulation, and the florets each set with a gem. It is good quality silver gilt. I wonder how it would have been worn?

  • Very beautiful Charlotte. Such intricate work. I have seen these before, but unfortunately don't know how they have been worn.

  • Dear Charlotte, this is lovely.  These were worn by Jewish women in Yemen, sewn onto the "gargush" hood they wore as a head covering.  Here are some examples where this ornament is on the tassels.

  • Dear Lynn and Betty,
Thank you both for your feedback, and I am very grateful for the pictures of how it would have been worn! I have searched the interweb and only found a single, similar example in silver, but your pictures have put my piece in context and now I can see how it balances those marvellous hoods. I can also see the link between the Jewish master silversmiths in Yemen and Ethiopia. I am flabbergasted at how small (about an inch long) and intricate it is! It must have taken many hours of finest skilled work to make.
  • very beautiful, love it!
