Very beautiful Charlotte. Such intricate work. I have seen these before, but unfortunately don't know how they have been worn.
Dear Charlotte, this is lovely. These were worn by Jewish women in Yemen, sewn onto the "gargush" hood they wore as a head covering. Here are some examples where this ornament is on the tassels.
Thank you both for your feedback, and I am very grateful for the pictures of how it would have been worn! I have searched the interweb and only found a single, similar example in silver, but your pictures have put my piece in context and now I can see how it balances those marvellous hoods. I can also see the link between the Jewish master silversmiths in Yemen and Ethiopia. I am flabbergasted at how small (about an inch long) and intricate it is! It must have taken many hours of finest skilled work to make.
very beautiful, love it!
