Tuareg sugar hammer

Nice old work from Niger. Tests as very low grade silver. I would presume more useful practically and stronger as a metal mix.

  • Very interesting tool. I am impressed with the idea of having such a tool and its function...It must be quite old?. Thanks for posting this item very nice indeed.

  • Tuareg sugar hammers are quite common and in use. the sugar is often a big hard lump (like the salt als well9 and has to be brought into small pieces to put into tea.  I have seen this Utensil in use during my trips into the Sahara North of Timbuktu approx. 2003 and 2006. However, I have never ever seen such a beautiful one. It is extraordinary! Congratulations, it is an outstanding Piece.

  • I agree Eva (great to hear from you again - hope you are doing fine): this is a lovely example of a sugar hammer. I love the knobs! Last year I saw another one for sale at a market - unfortunately they can be quite pricey (which is totally justified) ...

  • I have tried to find a photo of the sugar hammers they used during our desert trips. I remember exactly how it looked like, but it means to look through some 4000 photos, and sorry, I just did not find it in the short time I was looking for it. But it was made of brass only and a lot less beautiful
