Ethnic Jewels

An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

Traditional bridal costume. Balıkesir (Turkey). Late-Ottoman style, 1930-1950.

A traditional bridal costume from Balıkesir town (& nearby villages). Late-Ottoman style, 1930-1940s. Set up around a reddish pink silk robe, adorned with large roses in golden thread embroidery, golden spirals & copper sequins; white silk threads connect the sequins, creating branch-like motifs (a technique called 'Balıkesir pullusu' = with sequins, of Balıkesir). (Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen / Belgium).

Two close-ups of the costume. The 'tepelikli fes' (hat with silver cover) and the silk headscarf (adorned with metallic sequins & white silk threads) date from the same period, as does the bronze cast belt, which features European 'Art Nouveau' influence. (Kavak Costume Collection-Antwerpen/Belgium).
