Timang Ular-Ular

A man's belt buckle from Central Java representing entwined snakes. Iron with gilding (now almost completely worn off). The buckle measures approx. 6.25 cm high. This probably dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. It is a type of accessory favored at the Kraton courts of Surakarta. Similar pieces are described by Richter in her book "Jewelry of Southeast Asia."
