Ethnic Jewels

An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

A good quality vintage hair pin from Central Java, circa mid 20th century. The top of the pin is sand cast from coin silver and hand set with faux diamonds. These may be either glass or white topaz. The tines of the pin are heavy gauge twisted wire of slightly different metal alloy with brass content. These have been soldered onto the head of the pin. Pins of this quality are more difficult to find than the more recent machine-stamped variety.

This was likely fabricated in either Yogyakarta or Surakarta.  Silver was not used much in Java before the 1930s.  Sterling silver was an import, and most of the marked Yogyakarta sterling is from the 1950s or later.
