The shells may be of the striped nerite variety.  Here is a link to their entry on wikipedia.  The genealogical info is there, too.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodoxus_transversalis

Those little "snail" shells also appear on Tunisian necklaces.  Are they snails or sea-shells?  Can anyone identify the species for me and the location of their habitat (i.e. are they North African or something procured by trade?)
