Syrian Braid Ornament, reworked

This is a Syrian braid ornament which has been reworked into a necklace with the addition of carnelian beads and silver chain extensions. I think about one and a half braid ornaments were used to make this necklace. Appears in "The Arts and Crafts of Syria" and also here: https://ethnicjewels.ning.com/photo/syrian-plait-beads

  • A very attractive way to use these old elements. I love the wear on the focal filigree beads.

  • Dear Lynn; This is a very nice arrangement. I am usually not a friend of rearranging jewelry into other than intended designs but this looks very good. I also like the German cut carnelians, they are setting off the silver very well. With kind regards. Peter
  • Dear Betty and Peter, thank you for your comments.  I agree with you Peter, I originally bought this because there was enough of the original to convert back into a braid ornament and I was curious, but the arrangement is very nice and I am enjoying it as is.  Does anyone know where and when dealers rearranged these old pieces?  I have seen this before with the cut carnelians and Syrian and Iraqi and I assume Turkish old ornaments, rearranged.

  • Dear Lynn: The components look very old and original which makes this piece a very attractive one. The arrangement is very nice and beautiful. It certainly is a good thing to add to your collection. I like it very much
